the weekend

This weekend i watched the wire and then went to a cadence weapon concert. check em both if you dont know...

i then woke up, moved out of my apartment, and then bummed around town a bit. since i was really just wasting time until i could sign the lease on my new apartment. i walked around, i cruised the subways, i was pleased to come across a string ensemble of about 8 or 9 people playing in the subway station chatelet, i sat down and listened to them play pachelbel's canon. it was the first time in a long time that i wasn't really in a hurry to go anywhere, i just had time to burn and enjoy myself. Evey two minutes or so a wave of people, just dropped off by the metro would flood the hallways, some took pictures of the group, others stopped to listen, and some just passed by like they didn't even hear them. It's funny the value we place on things when they're free.

and now, a poignant analysis of star wars episode IV , if you haven't seen star wars, are we really friends? how did you get the address to this site?

found him

my immune system took a beating this weekend. i went to two house parties in the suburbs, one on friday night and one on saturday night, and then came back into paris after both parties only to fall into some savagery, think drunk bike riding à deux, near beatdown experiences, and an overall disregard for time, dignity, and "good' dance moves.

i think at one of those house parties, in classic french style, they were playing old american music, gangstas paradise came on, and i asked myself, what happend to coolio? was he a one hit wonder? nah, cause he had CU when you get there, the aformentioned anthem, and then i remembered he had that awesome video for one two three four... where he rolls around on a big wheel??

well hes back and not a moment too soon.  where has coolio been all these years?? apparently, in the kitchen.  god bless b list celebrities and the internet

mardi gras indians

just in case you didnt know, or if you've never been. new orleans is wild. there are so many types of freaks and geeks that live in the city, in the marigny, uptown, on the west bank, and all over the "greater new orleans area". and mardi gras is, historically, one of those times that everybody comes together to get wild, have a good time, and just throw it down.

one such group is the mardi gras indians. in short, these guys are total badasses, who have alter egos that are just plain funky. they're chants have influenced bands like the meters, and the brass bands that come out of the city. the indiansf have names like tootie montana, quarter moon, monk boudreaux, and big chief bo dollis, they're groups or "tribes" have names like the creole wild west, the fi-yi-yi, the golden nation, the uptown rulers, and the wild tchopitoulas.

i wanted to go look for them last year, you have to look for them on mardi gras day because, unlike the big parades, they go through backstreets and have no planned route. i didn't get to see them last mardi gras, but i got to go see their practice at handa wanda's when i was in town for new years.

today, i was on the bike today and saw a brazilian drum group and stopped to watch them play some vaguely new orleansy rhythms and breaks. it was as close as i'm gonna get this year to those funky indian second line beats.
